Tokyo 9 A.M. March 2000

This picture is for me the starting point of my artistic work and I always felt it articulated so strongly what I want to pursue in making art. How relationships are forged, how they operate and how conscious they are. Subject-subject relations and subject-object relationships. In this photograph the tension between those two is sizzling while both seem to react opposite to one another. On top of that the lines in the background amplifies the situation in a compositional sense even more. Also the Doisneau-like qualities gives it that dreamy touch, but opposite to Doisneau this picture wasn’t staged at all.

In 2015 I was asked by the publishing house De Geus if this work could be used as a cover for a young Chinese novelist. The result is underneath:
